| | Greetings!
We would like to share a story of courage and hope from one of our members.
Kevin was 17 years old and struggling when he came to the Sacramento Gay & Lesbian Center for help. Kevin first realized he was gay when he was only 13 and just starting 7th grade. Unlike most of his male friends, he knew he wasn't attracted to girls. He felt awkward and confused about where he fit in. During the summer between 7th and 8th grade, he kissed a boy for the first time. The result was emotional turmoil. "I was scared of what people would think of me," Kevin says. By the time Kevin reached his freshman year in high school, he was in denial about his sexual orientation. "I tried everything I could do to be with a girl," he recalls. "It was the most awkward thing I have ever done." Kevin's struggle continued. "For two years I lived in this stage where I was afraid of who I was, afraid of what my friends and family would think of me, afraid that my parents would hate me. So I hid it," he says. Along the way, like many lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or questioning youth, Kevin even tried to commit suicide. Finally, about a year ago, Kevin met someone he cared for deeply and decided to come out to his friends and family. Although most people were accepting and supportive, the coming out process was often rocky, particularly when it came to his mom. Kevin came to the Center last summer, looking for someone to talk to about how to cope with coming out and how to help his mom understand and accept him for who he is. At the Center he found compassionate, trained staff who provided counseling and support and even accompanied Kevin for his first HIV test. Today, Kevin is enjoying a successful senior year as an out gay student and an activist with Equality California and Marriage Equality USA. Every day someone in our community turns to the Center for help. It may be a youth in crisis. It may be a transgender person seeking counseling resources. It may be a lesbian or gay adult seeking community and social support. It may be a victim of discrimination seeking legal advice. For 24 years, in good times and bad, the Center has been there for those in our community who needed us most. Now, in a tough economy as corporate sponsorships, foundation grants and other sources of revenue dwindle, the Center needs your help more than ever before. During the holiday season, many of us are moved to donate to worthy causes or organizations that are close to our hearts. Kevin is just one of many reasons we hope you will consider a donation to the Sacramento Gay & Lesbian Center this year. Here are some ways you can help:
-
Mail your donation to the Sacramento Gay & Lesbian Center, 1927 L Street, Sacramento, CA 95811. Become a Center member or Quarter Century Club member. -
Forward Kevin's story to 5 friends and ask them to help the Center. -
