Women’s Support Group
Saturdays
10:00am – 12:00pm
Beginning January 14th, 2012
Welcoming of all self-identified women of all orientations, gender expressions, biological sexes, ages, abilities, ethnicities, relationship status, political views, and spiritual beliefs. The only requirement for participation is that an individual self-identifies as a woman, is looking to grow emotionally, and is open to supporting other women in the growth process.
The group is open to new members each week, with the hope that individuals will attend regularly. A core group of regular attendees help foster a safe space, build trust, and create relationships that support vulnerability.
This is a peer support counseling group.
“Peer Support” refers to the facilitator functioning as a guide for the group and also as a participant in the group versus having an objective non-participatory facilitator. The group is being facilitated by Mandy Taylor. Mandy has her Master’s in Social Work and previous experience facilitating multiple types of groups. She is excited about the insight and growth she anticipates obtaining along with the other group members.
“Counseling” refers to the content of the group. This is not a socially focused group though relationship building is desired outcome. The core components of the group are:
1) focusing on the interpersonal process,
2) gaining awareness of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors,
3) acquiring and enhancing healthy coping strategies,
4) sharing constructive feedback focused in the present moment, and
5) a commitment to personal development and growth.
Individuals who would benefit from a higher level of support than is available through a peer support counseling group, those experiencing mental health concerns that significantly impair functioning and/or interfere with the group process, will be referred to community counseling services for individual therapy.
Group content will be focused on the unique experiences of women in the queer community, including the challenges and benefits of navigating family, relationships, careers, and community as queer women. Content is developed from public sources, provided by community members, and/or created by the group facilitator. During some meetings extensive materials, such as worksheets or multi-media, will be used. On other occasions, brief topic explanations or statistical information may be provided for discussion. To support the growth of tactile and visual learners, most group meetings will include a hard copy of topic material for review and notes. After group cohesion is established, group members are empowered to co-facilitate using materials developed by members. Group members are invited to meet with the facilitator outside of group time to schedule co-facilitation.
Play Care will be provided by a center volunteer for most group meetings. Please email facilitator in advance to confirm availability.
Confidentiality: The group has a confidentiality policy specifying information shared during group meetings will not be shared outside of the group, including the identification of members. Any one breaking this policy will be asked to leave the group.
Cost: A $5-15 donation is requested from participants. Donations will go towards facilities costs, materials, support costs, and events. No one will be turned away for lack of funds.
