Protecting Transgender Children’s Rights

July 2017: The Sacramento LGBT Community Center urged the Rocklin Charter Academy to push for a safe and affirming environment for trans youth and to re-affirm it’s commitment to diversity.

Thanks to the great turnout of our partner organizations, community members, and local leaders, we are happy to announce that the school affirmed its commitment to diversity and protection of trans children. More than 550 advocates signed our petition in an inspirational show of support.

After 3 hours of public comment, the board of directors made the following decisions:

1) Affirm the existing literature selection policy that allowed for “I am Jazz” to be read.
2) Affirm the school’s commitment to ensuring that students are not discriminated against for being in a protected class as required by state law, AB 1266.
3) Decline to adopt the policy proposal from Capital Resource Institute, which would have allowed for “opting out of” state education standard curriculum and notifying parents of any “physical privacy concerns” in spaces where students may undress.
