We offer a two-day comprehensive Sacramento LGBT Community Center Training designed specifically to support our volunteers and interns.

The purpose of this training is to increase the Center’s cultural competency, provide clear support and communication to volunteers, and increase awareness of LGBTQ issues within the community.

This comprehensive training is mandatory for all direct service volunteers. Direct service includes anyone having contact with community members, including group facilitators, referral services, health outreach, front desk, community education and all interns. This does not include folks who donate their time primarily as event volunteers.

The LGBT Community Center Training includes:

  • Foundations of Cultural Responsiveness
  • Queer 101
  • Queer People of Color
  • Trans* Communities
  • Center History & Mission
  • Center Programs Overview
  • Boundaries in Small Communities

The training is offered quarterly. Volunteers and interns are provided with training date options during the application process.

“I attended the training session for new volunteers on Saturday and I thought it was incredible.  After living in San Francisco for over 25 years I thought there was nothing new that I could learn about the LGBT community, but the training gave me new insights to the challenges faced by other people in the LGBT community who may have a different background and different life experiences than me.  I found the training eye-opening, and  it helped me to understand and be sensitive to the problems that others have to overcome.  The training was really well structured and used exercises, videos, lecture and examples to deliver the information in a lively and interesting way. “
