Statement on Texas Governor Abbot’s Attack on Trans and Non-Binary Children and their Families

The Sacramento LGBT Community Center strongly condemns Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s transphobic attack on transgender and gender non-conforming (TGNC) children and families.

Affirming healthcare for transgender kids is, and always will be, medically necessary, life-saving care and should not be treated differently due to the non-binding opinions and actions of the Attorney General and the Governor. Using the Texas Department of Children and Family Services to threaten the families of TGNC children will lead to considerable long-lasting harm, TGNC youth face disproportionately higher rates of bullying and harassment which this proposed policy will only aggravate. Additionally, the threat of separation of TGNC children from parents and guardians that love and support them, is particularly heinous and will place undue stress and trauma on LGBTQ+ families.

The Sacramento LGBT Community Center stands in support of the parents and guardians of TGNC children and will always serve as a resource to families that have been victimized by such harmful policy. The Center also stands in solidarity with the LGBTQ organizations and advocates in Texas who are fighting this policy.

If you or someone you know have been negatively impacted by this attack on TGNC youth and families, please know that the Sacramento LGBT Community Center offers mental health resources such as counseling, respite, and referrals at both Lavender Heights and Marsha P. Johnson Center South locations. Please call (916)-442-0185 or email info@saccenter.org.
