Last week you met Javier, a young boy who promised to “grow up straight” after realizing that society didn’t accept, let alone tolerate, people like him. By 13, Javier couldn’t handle it anymore… so he attempted to end his life.
Javier’s journey to self-love, like many of us, is a long road. For years, he struggled with coming out. And then he found us. He found a home at the Center. He found a family of staff and community members that loved him. More importantly, he found a space that was dedicated to his bright future.
And then he learned about Sacramento Pride.
Javier saw it all – families and folks of every color of the rainbow. To top it off, he saw allies standing in solidarity and celebrating the beauty of our diverse LGBTQ community. He had a new realization. “For the first time in a long time I saw a future for myself.” The years of depression and hiding his passions faded. Suddenly, the festival main stage appeared in plain sight. Like a sign from above, or perhaps, a reflection of his blossoming, Javier found himself a new dream. He wanted to perform on that stage.
At the Center we believe every person is of value and worth. Each person deserves to be not only safe and welcome, but able to thrive. Javier is one of 18,000 people who attend Sacramento Pride, the largest community event hosted by the Center. We also host another 36 events throughout the year with events like Q-Prom, Friendsgiving, Camp Camp, World AIDS Day, Trans Family Day, and Out at the State Fair.
