About Q-Prom

Youth RSVP For Q-Prom Here!

Q-Prom is a safe space for youth to be themselves, without the fear of judgment, and have an amazing night with their friends!

Why do we host Q-Prom? Oftentimes, LGBTQ+ youth are bullied, harassed, or othered because of their sexual orientation and/or gender identity. The confidence to express themselves authentically is stifled due to stigma and fear of judgement, from both peers and sometimes even faculty. This results in youth not being able to attend school dances or experience prom like their peers.

This year we’re excited to host Q-Prom at Ace of Spades for the very first time! Chaperones are able to volunteer by going through our volunteer sign-up process.

Why ages 13-20? At the Sacramento LGBT Community Center, we serve youth starting at 13 because that’s when many begin exploring their identities and seeking a sense of belonging. For some, these early teen years are filled with challenges—whether it’s bullying, feeling isolated, or not having the support they need at home or school. That’s why we offer programs and services specifically for this age group, like peer support groups and mental health services. Q-Prom is just another way we create a safe, celebratory space where younger teens can feel seen, supported, and—most importantly—free to be themselves. For older youth, ages 18 to 20, Q-Prom provides something a little different but just as meaningful. Many LGBTQ+ young adults may have missed out on traditional school proms because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. By extending the age range, we’re giving them the chance to reconnect with their community, celebrate in a safe space, and reclaim experiences they might have lost.

Having the 13-20 age range ensures that we’re including both younger teens and young adults, allowing them to share in this special event and build connections that span across the age spectrum. Additionally, our Center works with Transitional Aged Youth (TAY) 13-24, and for this event, we open it to our TAY youth under 21, because this is an alcohol & substance free event.
