The Sacramento LGBT Community Center condemns the Supreme Court of the United States’ opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health which overturns the right to abortion. LGBTQ+ rights and Reproductive Justice are inexorably linked, and this decision will affect many LGBTQ+ people nationwide. Furthermore, the right to privacy which Roe v. Wade cited, is also the basis for decisions such as Lawrence v. Texas and Obergefell v. Hodges, which granted our community the right to exist and marry. Both of these rights are now threatened.
We call on federal legislators to pass abortion protections and the Equal Rights Amendment to prevent a backslide and loss of rights for communities. The Sacramento LGBT Community Center stands with abortion providers and also provides support groups and mental health services for those who need extra support in these times.
We call on our community to support abortion providers such as planned parenthood and abortion funds in states where abortion will become illegal. We also urge community to contact their federal representatives to push for abortion legalization and the Equal Rights Amendment.
Abortion is still safe and legal in California. Local Sacramento Planned Parenthoods can be found here: Planned Parenthood – Sacramento
