On Thursday, the Sacramento LGBT Community Center joined supporters, advocates, and elected officials at the California State Capital in support of Senator Scott Wiener’s announcement of new legislation that will protect and grant refuge to trans kids and their parents who flee to California from states who are proposing and passing laws criminalizing parents who help their kids get access to gender-affirming care. The Center’s Director of Advocacy and Training, Alexis Sanchez, had the privilege to speak at the event and represent the Center.
The Center fully supports Sen. Wiener’s proposed legislation and joins in solidarity with the numerous human rights organizations, advocates, and politicians across the country who are opposing Texas’ hateful legislation, and other states who are proposing and passing similar heinous laws.
Senator Wiener’s legislation will:
- Reject any out-of-state court judgment removing trans kids from their parents based on parents allowing their kids to receive gender-affirming healthcare, and such judgments are against California public policy and precludes those judgments from being enforced in California courts.
- Bars compliance in California with any out-of-state subpoena seeking health or related information about people who come to California to receive gender-affirming care, if the subpoena relates to efforts to criminalize people, or remove children, based on receiving gender-affirming care.
- States California’s public policy that enforcing any out-of-state arrest warrant for someone based on violating another state’s law against receiving gender-affirming care is the lowest law enforcement priority in California.
